Trackbacks are an excellent way to initiate the sharing information with another website.
It's a great way for you to initiate a connection with another blogger instead of waiting for those bloggers to discover you.
But more importantly trackbacks can increase the awareness as well as the credibility of your blog. After all, people have to think that your posts are good enough to be trackbacked.
Imagine if 5 different bloggers trackbacked a post on your blog. Depending on how popular their blog is, that’s potentially as much as a hundred new readers for your blog! That's a lot of good traffic you may not otherwise get. Nice, huh?
How Trackbacks Work
If I write a post on my blog about a post on your blog, my blogging tool will notify your blog to inform you of that. Your blog will then display the excerpt of the post that I made, with a link back to the post on my site. This allows visitors to your site (and you) to know what comments are being made about your post, but the post is on my site instead of yours, as it would be if I had just left a comment.
Trackbacks are a great way to get additional traffic to your blog and get noticed. But not everyone knows how to use them. Here's a nice example on how trackbacks work and how to use them.
On the downside of trackbacks
Trackbacks can help with traffic and links but trackbacks are an avenue for spammers and you've probably noticed that many sites have their track backs turned off.
I haven't used trackbacks for that very reason as I've had enough of the spammers, I personally like sticking with comments and if you have Wordpress and use the Akismet feature comment spamming isn't an issue.
Making blog entries often and citing entries on other blogs can be just as helpful. It's also important to encourage commentary on your blog. Of course getting those comments isn't as easy as it looks, but you're in luck, I found "10 Techniques to Get More Comments on Your Blog" by Darren Rowse of Problogger.net. If you're not getting many blog comments I think you'll appreciate these ideas.
Happy Blogging!
