Survey Your Readers for Feedback

April 8th, 2009 by Ms. Liz

It can’t be said enough that one of the best ways to make sure you’re delivering value to your list members is to ask them what they value.  Use a feedback survey to get those answers.

Guessing just doesn't work.

Is gold valuable? Not to someone who is drowning. I think they'd much prefer a life vest.

Is a glass of water valuable? It certainly is if you're stranded in a desert. The guy in the example above, though.. probably would pass.

It doesn't matter what YOU think is valuable. It matters what your list members think.

When implementing their email marketing and list building strategies, too many people consistently send messages that they aren’t sure their list members can even benefit from. By serving your members and asking them to tell you what they want to learn about, and what kind of offers they want to see, they’ll be a lot more likely to trust you and to buy from you.

That brings me to another important point.   When creating your business or your website, be sure you stay niche focused.  If your website topic and the products you offer are too broad it’s hard to get a grasp on what your visitors are really looking for.

Take for example a website that I started several years ago. It was a skin care products site.  The site included all kinds of skin care, anti-aging, acne, tanning, perfumes, moisturizers, aromatherapy, rosacea and more.

With all those topics, what do you think happened when I conducted a feedback survey and asked people what they wanted to know, I got about 50 different answers.  That made it really hard to try to give all my email subscribers what they wanted. The ones who were looking for acne information would unsubscribe when I delivered anti-aging advice and the anti-aging members left when I sent tanning information.  I think you can see the problem.

Do your best to be as niche focused with your website as possible.  You’ll not only keep your subscribers interested because you'll be sending them what they are most interested in, you'll also increase your sales potential.
