I get questions all the time from readers on how to get started with internet marketing. In fact many of them often go off and begin by buying products such as email autoresponders or hosting services or website builders and then get stuck not knowing what to do next or even worse, their frustrated because they're not making any money and need to know what to do.
If you're just starting out let me say this "STOP!". Here's what I suggest you do first before anything else….
Before buying a bunch of products and services, start out first by deciding what kind of internet marketing business you want to be in.
So many people start out by wanting to build a website, that's fine but where are you going with that website?
Do you have a product to sell? If you do, how do you plan on marketing it?
If you don't have a product, will you be creating one?
Will your product require shipping and handling or are you thinking about developing an information product?
If your own product isn't something you're interested in perhaps affiliate sales or wholesale dropshipping a better fit? If they are, what type of products do you want to affiliate with or what kinds of products do you want to dropship?
Maybe you don't even want a full time online business, maybe you just want to make some money on the side. In that case you could do online surveys or some freelance work, maybe even sell some trinkets you have around the house on Ebay.
The next step is to think 'niche'. The internet is full of competition and if your competition is too hefty it's hard to compete, not impossible, just harder. Therefore it's better to find a specialized niche that people are interested in.
For example, growing roses is a nice niche but it has received a lot of competition in the past few years. Now if you take a look at 'growing roses in containers', it's a more specialized niche and it has generated some pretty good interest. I know that because if I look at Wordtracker I can see that 'growing roses' is searched on about 215 times a day in Google but it also has about 440,000 web pages that talk about growing roses.
Now if I look at 'growing roses in containers' I can see that it is searched on about 47 times a day, but it has only about 66,000 web pages competing. That means I have less competition which means a better chance to compete in the search engines. 66,000 web pages may seem like a lot but it's a drop in the bucket when it comes to competition.
It's this type of research that helps you decide what to market on the internet, making internet marketing less of a challenge.
Bottom line … this is the kind of research you must do FIRST before anything else.
Once you have first researched and understood the options for making money online, then you can delve into the business itself and learn how to make money from it. You'll have a path to follow and instinctively know what it is you need to learn more about.
If you just willy nilly get online with no solid direction in hopes of making some fast money you may be sadly disappointed. Start out the right way and develop a path. It's a little bit slower but you'll suffer a lot less aggravation and make a lot more sales in the end.
