If you want to drive lots of targeted traffic to your website there are basically only 3 good ways, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), pay-per-click advertising and writing articles. I've done all three and more but through my experience, these have worked the best.
Now which of these methods will work for you is the topic of discussion in this article.
You've probably heard a lot about pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and it is quite popular simply because it can bring traffic to your site almost immediately. You can set up a free account with Google or Yahoo! and begin driving traffic in a matter of minutes but how effective is this for the average or beginner internet marketer. I'd have to advise it with lots of caution. It's quick but it can be dangerous.
Let me explain:
Unless you are an experienced pay-per-click advertiser you can literally lose your shirt if you don't know what you are doing. Choosing the correct keywords, writing ads that actually get clicks and budgeting carefully can be a problem for most people.
For example, I have a small personal budgeting website and ran a Google Adwords campaign for the keyword 'personal budgeting’. For my ads to show at all my bid for that keyword will need to be $10 per click …ouch! However, the problem could also lie with my website's quality score, which isn't very clear and often confuses me as to why my site doesn't measure up to the Google quality score, but that's another problem all together.
But what's even scarier is the 'click fraud' that tends to take place with PPC advertising. Back in 2006 both Google and Yahoo! paid millions to advertisers resulting from click fraud law suits. Both companies have since taken great precaution against such fraudulent actions but concerns remain, in fact Freakonomics noted in a case study that 16.6 percent of all pay-per-clicks on the Internet were fraudulent in the fourth quarter of 2007, up from 14.2 percent for the same quarter in 2006.
OK, so let's move on to a very basic but important strategy, Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Definitely a more promising option. Should you optimize your website, absolutely! Should you spend a ton of money at it, not at all.
Focusing on SEO basics like keyword density, title description, meta tags, getting plenty of good quality inbound links and furnishing your site with unique, relevant fresh content is extremely important. Delving deep into the bowels of the search engine algorithms and trying to keep up with algorithm changes won't help you much, in fact as Search engines algorithms change you could eventually hurt your rankings with black hat and spammy techniques.
Brad Callen puts out an excellent free downloadable SEO guide that gives you just about everything you need for good Search engine optimization techniques and strategies.
That brings me to my final and, in my opinion, the BEST option for getting quality, targeted traffic to any website. It's article marketing.
I love article marketing mainly because it won't cost you anything except a little time and creativity. In fact you don't even need that if you find PLR (private Label Rights) articles or even hire a ghostwriter to write the articles for you.
The best thing about articles is they are viral. That means when you publish your articles and allow others to freely use your articles (with your resource box of course) in their newsletters, websites or emails, your articles will spread like a virus. Thousands and yes, even millions of other web surfers will see your articles and your resource box will send them directly to your website.
But what's even more is that each time someone uses your article on their website or on their blog you are getting an inbound link. That's right, no more link requests or link exchanges to request and keep track of.
But the benefits don't stop there. Articles will brand you as an expert in your field. They build credibility for you and your website which will improve your reputation as well as your sales.
So what's the best method for you?
All of the above methods work and a well rounded marketing strategy must include good SEO, however due to the cost effectiveness of article marketing, its viral benefits, its ability to brand you as an expert and the hundreds of good quality inbound links it will create, I'd have to say article marketing is the clear winner.
