Big Mistake! What Would You Do?

June 24th, 2008 by Ms. Liz

As I opened one of my affiliate checks that I got in the mail yesterday, I got a big surprise!

This check was was from an affiliate program (I better not mention who) that I like and promote on my site but I don't really promote it outside of my site.  In fact for last month the check should have been for only $67.90 which is what I expected, but as I opened the check I discovered it was for $6,790.00!

Wow $6,790.00!  Did I do more sales than I thought?

I quickly rushed to my affiliate account online and saw, nope, $67.90 was what they owed me.  OK, so what's the deal?  Then it became apparent that there was a big typo, someone moved the decimal point.  Yikes, I hope they don't do that very often.

What a tease! Now I'm not a dishonest person and the first thing that crossed my mind was to notify my affiliate manager and let them know about the error, which is what I did.  Yep, kinda hard but I wouldn't feel right otherwise.

Since receiving that check I've had several comments from people like "Hey keep it, their mistake, your gain" and "Finders keepers …!".

I have to admit, it's hard to get a large check in the mail and then have to return it, but it would be a lot harder to cash the check, use the money and then have to return it later on.  Besides it's not right in my mind to cash in on someone else's mistake, as careless as it was.

Anyway, what would you do?  Take the money and run or return it?
