Link popularity is "page specific," NOT "site specific." That means you need develop a strategy for each page of your website or at least your most important pages such as sales or affiliate pages. This strategy is about creating internal links for each page.
Creating internal links means adding text links to the page that links to other site pages. For each important page on my site I like to have at least 3 other internal pages that have link text linking to it. Here's how it's done….
To help me do this I use Wordtracker to make sure I'm using relevant, highly searched on keywords for each page, then I make sure those keyword or keyword phrases are used in my page title and page header. I also sure I use those same keywords as my page's filename as well. Here's an example:
Let's say you have a page about 'red tennis shoes', here's how it should look:
Name your page: http://www.yoursitename.com/red_tennis_shoes.html
The heading of the page and the title of the page should include the phrase 'red tennis shoes'
Include the following text link on at least 3 other of your site's pages:
<a href="http://www.yoursitename.com/red_tennis_shoes.html"> red tennis shoes </a>
Another tip would be to include the term 'red tennis shoes' in your site's navigation as well.
