The direct sales industry is over 25 billion dollar business and is described as the sale of consumer
products or services through person-to-person contact, away from the retail location.
What is direct sales?
Direct sales involves finding a business or product that you have an interest in and selling those products
as your own business. But first you much choose a direct sales company to represent and there are lots of them. You've probably heard
of some of the more popular ones such as Tupperware and Mary Kay Cosmetics.
The most popular type of direct sales is “party plan”. Joining a party plan company means you become a
consultant. Each company will have its own policies, but most consultants are able to sell a company’s products through home parties, catalog
parties, craft shows, fundraisers, and online sales.
Of course, you can sell to your own family and friends, however to be successful you'll need to branch out to
other targeted audiences.
As a consultant for a direct sales company, you will be paid a commission on the products you sell, and you
may also receive a commission for the products your team members sell. Of course this means that you will need to also recruit others to be
on your team. Most companies allow you to receive payment immediately by letting you take your commission directly from the payment you receive
from your customers. You would then order the products and pay the company. Any bonus checks or commissions earned on your team would be sent to
you, usually once per month.
There are several benefits to becoming a direct sales marketer, you can choose the hours you want to
work. You can work full or part time. You can have as many or as few parties as you wish, for example, if an average party produces
$400 in sales and your commission is 25% you can make $800 a month by booking 8 parties, that's 2 parties a week.
As with any business there can be downsides and direct sales is no different. For instance, finding people to
host parties can be a challenge. Also finding childcare while you are working can be a problem. There are also direct sales companies that
have closed their doors unexpectedly which can be frustrating as you may be left with inventory or products or cannot get additional products
that a customer may have already ordered.
You can avoid such problems by making sure you check the company’s credentials thoroughly before investing
any money.
