Setting Up An Internet Home Business

The beauty of an internet home business is that you don't need to spend a lot of money to start.  In fact you probably already have the basic tools needed to get started.

But here's a list you might want to go over just so you can see some of the tools and resources that are required and some of my personal advice for helping you get organized and stay focused.

Lesson #1

Basic Operating Needs

- Computer & Internet Service. You'll need a reliable computer with good internet access.

- Security Software. Get yourself a good security software package with a firewall.  I've made the mistake of not using security software only once and I've never done it again. The headaches and frustration are just too much.

Even though many of the tools we use for an online business are accessed remotely, there are still things you'll keep on your hard drive, so don't risk losing that information because you didn't use security software. It's simply not worth the headache.

- A printer isn't a must, but it's handy for printing out important documents or guides that you don't want to read at your computer.

- Word Processor. I suggest a Word Processor like MS Word or download which is free. I personally like OpenOffice only because it's free, but it's every bit as good as MS Word and has a free PDF maker which will come in handy as your business progresses.

- Time Tracking Software.  It's important to know what tasks you need to perform each day and how much time you are spending on them so you know what actually results in a profit for your business and what things are eating up your time.

- A reliable email account. Many business owners have several email accounts.  You can use free email services like Google's GMail or Yahoo Mail.

- Web Hosting Service. If you'll be creating a website, which is where most online businesses start, you need a web hosting service and a domain name. We'll talk about this more in Lessons 4 and 5.  With a web hosting account you'll also be given free email accounts.

Have a Plan & Stay Organized

Start out by setting a goal for your business. Write down where you want to be five years in terms of your business and financial success.

Next, create a business plan.  I can't tell you how essential this is for your success. This is where you will chart your course, and doing that will help ensure you meet your goals.

I want to stress this with you because this was a mistake I made when starting my online business. I didn't do a business plan because I didn't think I needed it.  I was anxious to get started and I wanted to dig in.  But the mistake I made was that I didn't think

Writing a business plan doesn't mean you have to lock yourself away in a private room for weeks and create a 50 page report.  In fact, for an online business your business plan won't be complicated, but it will force you to think carefully about your business and what you'll need to do to make it successful.

  • What will you offer?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What issues can you expect to come up?
  • Who are your competitors?
  • Who are your customers?
  • How will you market your business?
  • What costs can you expect?
  • How will you manage your business?

Weakness in any of these areas can cause your business to fail.  I've struggled in all of these areas simply because I didn't plan. Believe me, you may be anxious to get started but you'll waste time and money if you skip this important step.

Stay Focused!

Information overload is common in this industry. It's easy to get on tons of email lists without even knowing it and before long you'll be confused, discouraged and suffer from overwhelm.

Avoid all of that and build your business one step at a time.  Don't let advertising and marketing distractions take you away from your plan at hand.

Keep email lists that you subscribe to separate from important emails that you need to read every day and subscriber emails for the end of the day.

Create monthly and daily tasks.  I love Google Tools, in particularly the Google Calendar.   And all Google Tools are completely free.

If you have lots of distractions at home, a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on your door works great ;-)

Never Doubt Yourself

Be positive about your accomplishments and never doubt that you CAN have a successful online business.

How you think has a major impact on what happens to you in your life.  I realized that from reading a book recommended to me by an online colleague who has turned into a very close friend today.  She was greatly inspired by this book and encouraged me to read it.

The book is called The Science of Getting Rich.  It's also free, in fact you can download and start reading it today.  You'll find some keen insight into how you can actually become rich just by changing the way you think. I loved it.
